General Description of Position

The Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting with the overall organization, direction, supervision and administration of Mansfield University’s NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball program. Duties include: assisting the head coach in all aspects of daily operations of the program, recruiting student athletes within the rules and philosophy of the NCAA, PSAC, and Mansfield University; evaluating personnel; emphasizing academic priorities to student athletes; assisting with organizing/conducting practices and games; related administrative tasks; fundraising; and maintaining appropriate communication and positive relationships with students, other coaches, university staff, parents, and alumni.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Recruiting, scouting, extensive driving, and use of organizational and computer skills required. Teaching-related skills and the ability to take direction from the head coach are essential. Ability to work with limited supervision. Communicate and work effectively with a wide variety of constituents, including alumni, friends, parents, faculty, campus staff and local community. Ability to relate to and communicate with high school and college student-athletes and coaches throughout the recruiting region. Must work effectively in a team environment. Working nights and weekends is required.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and one year previous playing and/or coaching experience at the collegiate level.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates must: present excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; demonstrate the ability to recruit student athletes into a program committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship both on and off the court; demonstrate a commitment to diversity; demonstrate the ability to recruit, develop, and motivate quality student-athletes; have an understanding of NCAA rules and regulations and be committed to their implementation and observance; possess a working knowledge of word processing, email, and spreadsheets (Microsoft Word & Excel); and demonstrate, through past accomplishments and behaviors, the ability to support Mansfield University’s principles and values of Character, Scholarship, Culture, Service ( and the University’s strong student-centered vision and mission. Preferred: Five years experience playing and coaching at the high school or collegiate level.

Physical Activities and Environmental Conditions

Ability to stand, walk, reach with arms, stoop, kneel, etc.

Other Conditions of Employment

Verification of all earned degrees through the receipt of original transcripts, acceptable background clearance check reports, authorization to be employed in the United States or the ability to obtain prior to commencement of employment, and positive references. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have certification in CPR and First Aid within six months of the commencement of employment and must maintain certification during employment.

Compensation and Benefits

Temporary, part-time position. Salary is in accordance with the APSCUF Collective Bargaining Agreement for Coaches
